    Creating A Lesson Plan

The trainer creates a lesson plan as their own resource. This needs to state the objective clearly, and outline the content of the lesson. It includes a list of training methods which will be used during each session, e.g. Whether a talk or demonstration is the best method for learning. Each element will be given a time limit for completion, and where required a list of questions will be prepared to encourage participation, test learning and feedback.

There will be a summary of the lesson and a list of handouts, facilities and equipment required. Finally each lesson will have a title.

The depth of the subject will depend on the level of familiarity learners have with the subject. Each session should be limited in time to around 45 minutes, breaking the season into no more than 3 or 4 chucks of information to avoid learner overload. Visual aids and media can be used to help retain interest in the lesson and reinforce training. You can download a free training resource for this section, click example lesson plan

Some examples of items you might include in a lesson plan:

    Handouts include:

    1. Job Descriptions
    2. Training Syllabus
    3. Training Programme

    Visual Aids and Equipment include:

    1. Powerpoint – laptop and projector
    2. Flip chart – paper and markers (bring my own!)
    3. Watch – to keep track of your time

    Set-up pre-introduction (create interest):

    1. Draw Parking Sheet first (flip chart 1)
    2. Write Ground-rules (flip chart 2)

State the aims of the presentation, see the following statement as an example:

To give an introduction to the theories behind learning and training and the steps taken when designing, delivering, evaluating and assessing a training programme.”

    Topic Headings:

Include topic headings so that it’s easy to keep track of your place in the lesson. Examples of topic headings below:

    • Introduction and Ground Rules
    • Theory and Motivation of Learning
    • Establish the Need for Training
    • Programme Planning
    • Programme Delivery
    • Summary

    Breakdown of each Topic:

Then do a breakdown for each topic heading on a seperate sheet so that it is easy for you to follow as you deliver the presentation:

Introduction and Ground Rules (Topic Heading)

    • Create Interest – Motivate
    • Give Talk Title
    • Revise / Re-cap if Necessary
    • Sound Out Learners Knowledge
    • Ground Rules
    • Parking Sheet
    • Handouts

When all the material is covered, you can give a summary. Again use bullet points to list the topic headings you mentioned, and discuss each briefly, telling the listener what was covered by the lesson presentation.

    Questions:

Follow this up with your questions to the group to get feedback so you can discover how well they absorbed the material, and to help assist with learning.
